My Return to Cybersecurity

My Return to Cybersecurity: A Journey of Passion, Struggles, and Hope

lost

Hi there! Welcome to my blog. Today, on February 27, 2025, I’ve decided to return to the field I left behind about a year and a half ago—cybersecurity. It feels like I’m picking up pieces of a passion I had forgotten, but it’s time to face the past and the lessons learned along the way.

Let me give you some context about who I am and what I’ve been through, and hopefully, you’ll understand why this return feels so personal.

From School Days to Cybersecurity Dreams

I was a regular, average student in school and college—nothing too special. But I always had a curiosity about technology. As a kid, I was that person who would tinker with everything. My first “hacking” attempts were pretty basic, like using Lucky Patcher to tweak games and try to get around in-app purchases. Yeah, I was that “HACKKOR,” as I’d like to call myself, doing lame tricks to hack games 😅. But that curiosity led me to do even more adventurous things, like hacking into nearby WPS-enabled WiFis just to see if I could intercept their passwords. Yes, I was that kid—and I thought I was pretty cool back then 😜.

College, Pandemic, and the Cybersecurity Awakening

Then came high school graduation, and boom—the pandemic hit. The world went upside down, and my plans for the future seemed to be on hold. I enrolled in my hometown college, which, to be honest, wasn’t exactly up to speed with modern tech. They mostly taught us outdated technologies, and all they cared about were assignments—what you actually learned was secondary. The real world was passing by, and my college was stuck in the past.

In the middle of this, I found my calling. While everyone was stuck with boring assignments, I stumbled across something exciting—cybersecurity. I began learning about hacking, bug bounties, and the OWASP Top 10. It wasn’t professional-level stuff, but I knew I was onto something big. My passion for cybersecurity grew, and I spent hours researching vulnerabilities, doing port scans, web pentesting, and experimenting with tools like Burp Suite. I found the world of hacking incredibly fascinating.

But reality hit when it was time for college placements.

The Harsh Reality of Job Placements

When placement time came, I realized I wasn’t ready. My programming skills were lacking. I couldn’t write code well enough, and most of the companies coming to campus were looking for software developers, not cybersecurity enthusiasts. I had a solid understanding of cybersecurity, but it didn’t help me land a job in a development-focused environment.

So, I made the decision to pivot and started focusing on web development, pushing my cybersecurity passion aside. I figured I needed a job, so I dove into web development—learning JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and all the frameworks that go with it. I forgot about hacking, bug bounties, and cybersecurity. I got my first web development job, and for a while, things seemed fine. But deep inside, I was drifting further from my passion.

The Return: Rediscovering Cybersecurity

Fast forward two years, and I’m now unemployed. I’ve been out of college for over two years, and honestly, things haven’t been easy. I did manage to land an internship, but for various reasons, I had to leave after 2.5 months. After that, I found another web development job in my hometown, but the work wasn’t fulfilling. The company wasn’t very professional, and they used tech I wasn’t interested in, so I left that too.

Now, I’m writing this blog, still unemployed, and trying to figure out what’s next. What’s clear is that I miss my cybersecurity days—the excitement of breaking things, learning new exploits, and the thrill of solving complex problems. Cybersecurity was always my dream, but I let it slip away for a while. Now, I’m ready to make my return.

The Struggle and the Hope

It’s not easy, though. Every day, I apply for jobs, but the responses are few and far between. The frustration of not hearing back is overwhelming. My parents, understandably, don’t understand why I’m still unemployed after all this time. But through all the struggles, one thing is clear: my skills in technology are the only thing I have left to rely on.

As I struggle to find my way, everything feels blurry. My destiny seems uncertain, and I feel lost in a maze of confusion. It’s like being trapped in a deep matrix where the exit is unclear. But still, there’s hope. If I can reclaim my passion for cybersecurity, maybe, just maybe, I’ll find my way again.

A Quote to Live By

As Elliot Alderson from Mr. Robot once said:

"The world is a simulation, and we’re all stuck in it, trying to find a way out."

I guess, in many ways, that’s how I feel right now—stuck, trying to find a way out of this maze of uncertainty. But I’m determined to keep going.

Conclusion

So here I am, back at the crossroads, hoping to transition my career back to cybersecurity. I’m not sure where this path will take me, but I’m ready to take the leap. If you’re reading this, I hope you never end up feeling as lost as I do. Keep grinding, keep fighting, and never give up on your passions.

That’s it for today’s blog. Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ll follow along as I attempt to find my way back to my dream.

Stay strong, and never stop learning. 💻✨
